Buracona

Buracona, better known as “Olho Azul” or “The Blue Eye,” is a natural gem located on the island of Sal in Cape Verde. This wonderful place is situated in a remote area in the northwest of the island, nestled among volcanic rocks that hang over the ocean, offering a unique natural pool where colors blend into a visual spectacle that enchants every visitor. The Blue Eye is an underwater cavity that, illuminated by the sun’s rays, reveals magical shades of blue and turquoise, making the water crystal clear and creating an extraordinary visual effect reminiscent of an eye’s iris.

The scenic backdrop surrounding Buracona is equally captivating. The black volcanic rocks, sculpted by the trade winds and ocean waves, frame a chasm approximately 2 meters by 3 meters in diameter, creating a contrast of colors between the black rock and the deep azure water. The coastline stretching from Palmeira to Buracona is a picturesque route, where the rugged landscape with high cliffs is constantly shaped by the sea waves crashing against the volcanic rock, creating a natural pool of seawater. This place is a true paradise for nature lovers and offers the opportunity to take a dip in this natural wonder, although swimming can be dangerous on windy days.

The surrounding context is enriched by the presence of Mount Monte Leste on one side and the turbulent ocean on the other, while the rest of the landscape disappears into a flat and rocky desert. The adventurous journey on a roughly 5-kilometer gravel and sand mixed road with bumps and small rocks that connects Palmeira to Buracona can be undertaken with a rented scooter or motorcycle, although a quad or jeep may offer a more comfortable ride.

Buracona is not only a visual experience but also an opportunity for exploration: diving enthusiasts might be tempted by the hidden caves and grottoes in this fantastic area, always respecting weather conditions and safety regulations. Additionally, visitors can complete the experience with a stop at a local restaurant, where they can enjoy a lobster dinner while taking in an unforgettable view. The entrance fee to Buracona is 3 euros, a small expense that proves entirely justified once immersed in such natural beauty. And for a souvenir of the adventure, you can visit the gift shop located at the entrance, which sells a wide range of local products, from Grog, a local alcoholic beverage, to handmade jewelry.
